Introduction
This course examines the current treatment modalities for small animal analgesia. Medications that may be given to aleviate pain are examined, including side effects and contraindications.
Learning Objectives
After completing this program, the participant should be able to:
- List different analgesic medications used in small animal pain management.
- Describe the signs that indicate pain and what to look for in postoperative patients.
- Discuss specific protocols as they pertain to pain management in small animals.
- Discuss the benefits of pain management in regards to successful case outcomes.
- Discuss the side effects of analgesic medications in specific case scenarios.
- Describe alternative routes of administration based upon patient cooperation.

Tal Guidry, D.V.M.
Dr. Guidry is a 1992 graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He is co-owner of Gloria Switch Road Veterinary Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana. His practice focuses on companion animal medicine and surgery, including some work with exotics. His special interest is orthopedic surgery, and he has completed advanced studies in this area. He also teaches a veterinary assistant course at a technical college. He does volunteer work for Wildlife In Distress, a local wildlife rehabilitation group. He is a guest speaker at Professional Compounding Centers of America Veterinary Compounding Symposium. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Acadiana Area Veterinary Medical Association.
